ESSAY

During my thorough research in to photojournalism history on how it started based on the equipment’s that was used and how it transformed in to a new direction, which is more suitable and understandable for the public. I had the opportunity to researched in to one of the world’s influential photojournalist called Dorothea Lange and I also researched about contemporary artists like Matt Black who is best known for documenting his native country Mexico and his birth town California.

Researching about the history of journalism and photography which was combined to form a word called photojournalism by Frank Luther. Some of the things that I found through this research like documenting war and other tragic events is something that I hoped to investigate on, in the future.

These researches in to photojournalism and the artists was to expand my knowledge and inspiration to create my own idea, for my Final Major Project (FMP). It is of no doubt that researching in to the specific field that I chose for my major project and for University, which is Journalism has enable me to know the basic things that is required to create my project and also to enlighten me about my future field.

This research has helped me more or inspired me on how to create my final project and to be more specific, Dorothea Lange and Matt Black has been a great inspiration to me because I learned from both artists on how to create a photojournalistic piece by investigating issues that the public can relate to and it should be based on facts.

For example, Margret Bourke White took photos of the workers in Montana building the Fort Peck and later decided to dig in to the worker’s stories by documenting them with her camera while they explained their life’s stories. It was important that she gathered all the information she needed concerning those workers with the use of her camera and the stories of the workers were told by the workers themselves which is more authentic and based on their personal experience.

Bourke made me realised that for my project to be based on facts and reality, I personally should record every piece and I should get in to the ways my subject think and their experience of information is what I should document to make the project authentic and to be based on the real struggles they faced.

PRACTICAL ASPECTS

In photojournalism, media devices like camera and software programmes are very important in this field and that’s why theory and practical worked effectively together. The theory basically explained stories or events in the past but people love to see or feel the visual scenes of the stories that was told and with the use of practical devices like digital camera and other software programmes that helped create a video like Premiere Pro allows the world to see the things that other people experienced in the past it can be happy or tragic events.

For example, in 1930s when Dorothea Lange was documenting Native America and the people life stories which was very tragic and devastating considering their houses and the clothes they wore. The story was by Lange and her boyfriend both theoretically and practically through the use of her camera, which she used to grab dramatic or tragic things during that period.

No matter how brilliant you explained your story theoretically, you can’t take the curiousness and also doubts, whether the story was an actual event that took place in real life or a make-up story based on human imagination. To avoid doubts and to make people believe, you just have to use practical equipment’s.

My practical work was based on Women’s Match. This was an event based on women protesting about the new elected president and it took place in Trafalgar Square, London. I had the opportunity to speak to some of the protestants and every one of them gave their reason on why they were protesting and it was very interest because I interviewed different age groups.

It was a very significant step the women took because they feel and think their rights is about to be thrashed in the gutter. Below are procedures of all the practical things I did to edit and publish my video.

DROPING FILE IN TO PREMIERE PRO

This screenshot is showing the process of dropping all my visual contents straight in to premiere pro, which allows me to edit all the media clips that was dropped in to the programme.

It is important that I select the right visual contents, that will be used for this project, in other to avoid selection of a wrong file or media contents.

USE OF INPUT AND OUT PUT

This is the process wherein I had to delete or cut out audio or visual contents that are unethical and I didn’t want viewers to see or hear things that are disturbing. For example; there were inappropriate terms mentioned by some of the Protestants that I interviewed but with the use of the input and out put, it enables me to get the right ethical contents for my final piece which will be seen by the public.

TITLE/TEXT

This is the process of writing different texts on the video, by selecting the Title tool, which enables me to create different font colours and style. Using the text tool was very important for my video because I had the chance to write the title of the video and to briefly explain some of the visual scenes that was shown in the video.

Without the use of text, it will be impossible for the public to know the hands behind the video that was created.

MP3 FILE

This is the process wherein I had to import musical soundtrack, for the video after downloading the sound from YouTube converter.

The reason why I downloaded a musical soundtrack was for some specific scenes in the video, which makes a perfect sense with some of the scenes that was included in the video. For example; there is a scene in this video that shows some contestants from the Women’s match dancing and I had to use the musical soundtrack I downloaded for that scene.

EXPORTING MEDIA

This is the process of exporting my video in to a specific format size. This process enables me to put together all the media clips and the soundtrack, in to one file.

FORMAT SIZE

The screen shot is showing the size format that I used when exporting my video. I used the H.264 format because it makes my visual contents quality to be intact without loosing any file and it is a way of avoiding pixelated visual contents after exporting the file.

Without the use of the H.264 or selecting the right format size for the video, it will be very hard for my video to view by the public because it will be completely hard to see the imageries clearly.

EMBEDING VIDEO OR RENDERING

This is the process of collecting all media files in to one format. It is very importing to allow media files to render because it create a video by gathering all the media contents.

It is impossible for a video to be ready to view if all the media files are not rendered.

CHANGE FILE VIEW FROM PRIVACY TO PUBLIC

This is the process of uploading my video on to YouTube. It is important that I consider the ways my video should be uploaded, based on two options which are; publicly and privately.

I selected the public option because the video is about the public viewers about the new President of United States and it is good for the world to see, since it was a topic about the world view on Donald Trump.

SELECTING MEDIA FOR UPLOAD

This screenshot is showing how I selected the video that I wanted to upload straight on to YouTube. It was very important that I selected or dragged the right video to be upload because it could be something totally different from what I had in mind.

For example, if I mistakenly upload a different or a raw visual contents that hasn’t been edited, which is very risky because it could land me in to legal action against me for uploading unethical contents.

UPLOADING VIDEO

The screenshot is showing the percentage of uploading the video on You tube. It is important to allow the video to be at a 100% before going further.

If the video was stopped while it on this stage, then it will be impossible for the video to be seen by the public.

PROCESSING VIDEO TO BE PUBLISH

This is the final stage of uploading my video on YouTube. All I had to do was to wait until the process reaches up to 100% and then clicked publish and finally my video was out to the public to see.

YOUTUBE LINK TO ACCESS VIDEO

This is a confirmation to see that my video is on YouTube and it gives me a lot of options to share the video to other social media networks through the video links which enables viewers to have access to the video.
